Lectionary Theme: Jesus Christ who stops at human cries (36th Sunday)

    9. But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, playing with her son Isaac.

    10. So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son; for the son of this slave woman shall not inherit along with my son Isaac.”

    11. The matter was very distressing to Abraham on account of his son.

    12. But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed because of the boy and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be named for you.

    13. As for the son of the slave woman, I will make a nation of him also, because he is your offspring.”

    14. So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed, and wandered about in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.

    15. When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under one of the bushes.

    16. Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot; for she said, “Do not let me look on the death of the child.” And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept.

    17. And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.

    18. Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make a great nation of him.”

    19. Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. She went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink.

    5. While Peter was kept in prison, the church prayed fervently to God for him. Peter Delivered from Prison

    6. The very night before Herod was going to bring him out, Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while guards in front of the door were keeping watch over the prison.

    7. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his wrists.

    8. The angel said to him, “Fasten your belt and put on your sandals.” He did so. Then he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.”

    9. Peter went out and followed him; he did not realize that what was happening with the angel’s help was real; he thought he was seeing a vision.

    10. After they had passed the first and the second guard, they came before the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went outside and walked along a lane, when suddenly the angel left him.

    11. Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hands of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”

    12. As soon as he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many had gathered and were praying.

    13. When he knocked at the outer gate, a maid named Rhoda came to answer.

    14. On recognizing Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed that, instead of opening the gate, she ran in and announced that Peter was standing at the gate.

    15. They said to her, “You are out of your mind!” But she insisted that it was so. They said, “It is his angel.”

    16. Meanwhile Peter continued knocking; and when they opened the gate, they saw him and were amazed.

    26. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with groanings too deep for words.

    27. And God, who searches hearts, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

    28. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.

    29. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family.

    30. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

    46. They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside.

    47. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

    48. Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

    49. Jesus stood still and said, “Call him here.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; get up, he is calling you.”

    50. So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus.

    51. Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “My teacher, let me see again.”

    52. Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.
